Biography

Obit: Samuel Augustus Young – husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, store owner, neighbor, St. Louis Cardinal fan, fisherman and friend to one and all was welcomed with open arms by his heavenly Father on April 8, 2013.

Sam was born on May 19, 1934 to Ernest and Hattie Milum Young at the home just built by his parents overlooking Pyatt, Arkansas. The youngest of 6 children, Sam was close to his siblings Mary, George, William, Kenneth and Edwin and their relationship over the years would help them all endure the premature death of their father, Ernest, who died when Sam was only 3 years old.

Sam grew up to continue the legacy of The Young Store in Pyatt for many years. From 1965 to 1987, he owned and operated the family business with honesty, integrity, and always with a keen eye toward helping the local community and his farm friends. On any given day, you would find local farmers, neighbors and Sam's favorite group of regulars around the pot-bellied wood stove in the center of The Young Store. It was a gathering place for many and Sam knew the history of each person. The Young family legacy was always prevalent in Pyatt and everyone knew that Sam was their "go to" in both good times and bad.

On February 4, 1956, Sam married his Valley Springs High School sweetheart, June Turney Young. Together, he and June would raise four daughters – Linda Kaye, Susan Annette, Lori Beth and Sammye Lynne in the community of Pyatt. The girls were a constant presence at The Young Store and Sam's pride in his girls was always evident any time they were near.

Sam not only served the community and surrounding county of Marion with his business, but he also was a member, deacon, and trustee of Pyatt Baptist Church, served on the Pyatt City Council, the Marion County Quorum Court, Marion County Fair Board, Pyatt PTA, and was a trustee of Woodmen of the World Lodge #1399. He entered the US Army in 1956 and served at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas, Fort Belvoir in Virginia and Fort Richardson in Alaska (before Alaska was even a state). He was honorably dismissed from active service in 1958 to serve in the US Army Reserves in Harrison, Arkansas. His honorable discharge from the US Army came in 1964.

Sam was a regular sight in his green Ranger fishing boat on Bull Shoals Lake. No one knew the coves around Point 125 boat dock better than Sam and he was always on the lookout for catfish. His grandchildren will tell you a highlight of coming to Pyatt was Sam's famous catfish frying skills. His amazing catfish fillets would disappear before they ever made it to the dinner table. Many summer nights would find Sam cooking catfish, eating watermelon and settling down to watch his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. There will never be a more dedicated Cardinal fan. There will never be a kinder neighbor and friend. There will never be a more wonderful father and husband.

Sam is survived by his wife June, his four daughters; Linda Kaye Young, M.D., her husband Bill Henderson, and children Anthony and Kelsey; Susan Annette Thomas, her husband Dan, and children Carrie and Will; Lori Beth Griggs, her husband Bruce, and children Nicki and Zach; and Sammye Lynne Blevins, her husband Gary, child Traci and grandchild Afton; brothers; Kenneth Young and Eddie Young, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Hattie Young, his sister, Mary and two brothers, George and Bill.

Sam's legacy will continue to live on through his daughters and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all those who were touched by his kind and gentle nature and compassionate heart.
