Biography

Woodhull Young, a talented maritime painter, studied at Pratt institute. He later became curator of the William K. Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport Long Island. His children always called him “Pop”. I always called him “Uncle Kink” An avid fisherman, sailor, and mentor to many young artists on Long Island, he could smoke a mean bluefish, sketch a yawl in 30 seconds, and spin a mesmerizing tale that would rival Twain. Inventive, kind, & self effacing, he kept a tiny freestanding studio facing Huntington harbor, on the footprint of the old steamboat captain’s house where he was born. When not engrossed with brush & pallet knife, an open outer door signaled that guests were welcome. “Jumpin’ Jenny Wren” he’d shout, “C’mon in & tell me what you’ve been messin’ with, I just made a pot a coffee...” a young Kink Young can be seen in Castle film's "Shorty Goes To Sea." (alternate title of "Chimp The Sailor). RH
