Biography

The Young family (originally spelled Jung) were part of the original group of Palatine refugees that fled from Holland to England in 1709. The following year they were sent to Ireland, where they eventually became part of the largest Palatine settlement in Ireland at Lord Southwell's estate in County Limerick.[1] Andrew was likely the son or grandson of the original immigrant.

The Young's were originally Lutherans and they were one of the first Palatine families to embrace John Wesley on his visits to Ireland, converting to Methodism.[2]

Andrew was born about 1730, the birth date an estimate based on the known date of John Young, suspected to be his son. Andrew is known to be the first of the Palatine Young's to have settled on Sir William Barker's estate at Kilcooly, Tipperary in the 1770's.[3]

Research Note

Andrew is suspected to be the father of John Young, who was born c.1754 and who died in Kilcooly in 1823. But it is possible that John was Andrew's younger brother instead. More research on the Irish Palatines who settled on the Southwell Estate in Limerick can shed more light on this.
