Biography
Private Charles Young served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: Jan. 11, 1862 Mustered out: Sept. 18, 1862 Side: USA Regiment(s): 29th Mass. Infantry
Charles Young was born about 1842, in either Massachusetts[1] or New Brunswick, Canada.[2] He was the son of Thomas and Jane (Gallon) Young. He lived with his family in Somerville, Massachusetts, by 1850, where his father was a gardener.[3]
He was a 20 year old clerk when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War on January 11, 1862. He mustered in as a private in Co. H of the 29th Massachusetts Infantry. He died of disease 9 months later, on September 18, 1862, at Craney Island, Virginia. [4]
His name is inscribed on the Civil War Soldiers Monument at the Milk Row Cemetery in Somerville, dedicated to residents who died during their Civil War service.[5]
