Biography

Marcy married Jacob Cook February 18, 1731(record says 1730, but marriage intention date of 1730/31 makes it clear 1731 was the new style year.) Quotes from the intention and marriage record: "February 3 : 1730/31 then entred the Intentions of Jacob Cook of Province Town & Marcy Young of Eastham to proseed in Marriage [symbol] me Joseph Doane Town clerk" Eastham and Orleans, Mass. Vital Records, Volume 28, page 173 (of NEHGR V.123, p.204.)[1] "february 18 : 1730 then Jacob Cook & marcy young were married by mr Samuel Orsbon.[2]

Research Note

  • RE 1712 birth date: The GED import gave an Ancestry.com source for the birth date, the American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI). Searched Mercy Young in AGBI in ancestry. Return: nothing found. Searched Mercy Cook. 2 entries found in Boston Transcript: 1) 21 Dec 1908, #347. Review of that gives Mercy (Paine) Cook born April 3, 1712. NOT Mercy Young. 2) 11 Jan 1909, #347. Mercy Paine was daughter of Deacon Thomas Paine and Bennett Paine, his wife. Again, NOT Mercy Young. This spurious reference to 1712 as Mercy YOUNG's birth date is the only reference found. Therefore, I am removed the AGBI as a source for the birth date. However, the Find A Grave site has a gravestone memorial, giving death dates for both Marcy and Jacob, her husband. The memorial says she died in her 90th year 31 July 1802, meaning she was 89 on that date, which would give a span of 1 year, more or less, on each side of that date in 1712 for her possible birth date (assuming accuracy of the gravestone.) Therefore, 1712 is a good estimate for her birth year, even though the sources previously given are for some other person. Parish-940.

  • Name: Marcy is the spelling given for her name on her marriage intention and marriage record. I find no other record for her, other than her memorial stone which reads "Mercy." Showing Mercy as a nickname.
