William Young was born in 1843 at Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland. He was the 2nd son of William Young of Craigellachie, Banff.
He was a banker, working in Scotland for the Royal Bank of Scotland and the North of Scotland Bank.
He emigrated to New Zealand on the ship Caribou, as a cabin passenger on the 1866 sailing from Glasgow which arrived at Port Chalmers on 12 January 1867.
In New Zealand, he worked for Messrs. Cargill, McLean and Co., and the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, and opened their London offices. He was also the Town Clerk of Invercargill between 1895 and 1905. He also operated his own commercial agency business.
On 8 November 1870, at "Lonmay Villa", Elm Row, [Dunedin?], New Zealand, he married Elizabeth Patricia Bennet Robertson, daughter of George Robertson, M.A., of Lonmay, Aberdeenshire.
Their children, with likely birth year, NZBDM birth reference, and other details (George Robertson and Patricia [Robertson] don't seem to have NZ birth registrations. They may have been born while he was in London):
Mary Georgina, 1871, 1871/36651, married George Findlay Murdoch.

He passed away on 17 November 1914 at his residence in Earnslaw Street, Invercargill (in the area known at the time as Northend), aged 71.
