Biography

Christopher Young was born in 1808 in Upper Canada. His parents were Peter Young and Hannah Riselay.
As a young man, he worked for his uncle James F Young and cousin John D Young in Barton township.[1] While there, he and his uncle became embroiled in the Coal Kiln Murder mystery, arrested for the murder of their farm hand Jesse Masters. In 1827 Masters had disappeared and the accusation was that he had been buried in the coal pit. No body was ever found and the pair were acquitted of the murder charge. The family's reputation was restored in 1830 when the supposed victim was found alive and well in New York.[2] It was around that time that Christopher married John's daughter, his second cousin, Catherine Young.[1] Together they had 6 children:[3]

  1. David Hess Young
  2. Hannah Amanda Young
  3. Anna Margaret Young
  4. Peter Macnab Young
  5. Mariah Martha Young
  6. Mary Cztherine Young

His wife Catherine died after giving birth to their sixth child, Mary Catherine in 1842. She was only thirty.
In the census that year, he was listed as an innkeeper at the Brantford Indian Reserve on the Grand River.[1]

The following year, he married Urania Ball on March 09, 1843. Together they had 5 children:[1]

  1. James Young
  2. Elizabeth Young
  3. Christopher Young
  4. Riselay Young
  5. Cora Young

In 1867, he is listed as a Qualified Magistrate for County Haldimand.[4] In the 1871 census, Christopher is listed as a hotel keeper.[5] And in the 1884-85 directory, just before his death, he is listed as a Justice of the Peace.[6]
He died of heart disease.[7]
