Loraina Young was born 22 May 1820 in Brown County, Ohio. Her death certificate names her parents as Henry Young and Johna Potts, both originally of New York.[1] Little is known of her early life, but she had moved to Jennings County, Indiana by 1840.
Loraina married Silas Jordan, another Brown County native, on 29 December 1840 in Jennings County, Indiana.[2] Their marriage produced eleven children:
In the 1850 U.S. Census, enumerated on 7 September 1850, the Silas Jordan family resided in Vernon Township in Jennings County, Indiana. Residing with the family were Elisseph Young (age 24) and Caroline Young (age 3), likely relatives of Loraina.[3]
In the 1860 U.S. Census, enumerated on 15 August 1860, the Silas Jordan family still resided in Vernon Township. Loraina's occupation was given as "House work," as was common for the time. [4]
In the 1870 U.S. Census, enumerated on 7 July 1870, the Silas Jordan family continued to reside in Vernon Township on the same farm. Loraina's occupation was given as "Keeping house."[5]
In the 1880 U.S. Census, enumerated on 9 June 1880, the Silas Jordan family resided in Vernon Township. Loraina's occupation was still given as "keeping house." The two youngest daughters, Adra and Carrie, resided with their parents, as well as two grandchildren, Harry Thixten (age 7) and Carrie Randall (age 6).[6]
Loraina was widowed in February 1900, and in the 1900 U.S. Census, enumerated on 5 June 1900, was residing with her daughter, Carrie Jordan Saupe, and her family in Vernon, Indiana. It is quite possible that both she and Silas had resided there for several years before his death.[7]
Loraina Jordan died on 4 August 1902 in Vernon, Indiana of acute dysentery at the age of 82.[8] She was buried in the Baldwin Cemetery beside her husband.[9]
