Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Phoebe (Young) Farrar was a Maryland colonist.

Phoebe Young was born in Maryland or Virginia around 1750/55.[1] Her parents were John Young and Martha Stuart.[citation needed]

She married Richard Farrar II,[1][2][3] and they migrated to District Ninety-Six in South Carolina after 1784 (when Richard witnessed records in Pittsylvania County, Virginia)[4] and before 1790 (when he was listed in the 1790 census for Pendleton County, South Carolina).[5] They had at least three children: [6][2]

  1. John (1774-1820)
  2. George Young W. (1776-1840)
  3. Elizabeth (1780-1836)

In 1792, Richard was killed by retaliating Cherokee indians in the Estatoe Valley near Oconee Station.[7] Phoebe probably went to live with her son George, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. George served as her agent in Georgia Land Lotteries of 1804 and 1806. In 1804 George held lottery 1021 and Phoebe lottery 1022. In 1806 George registered as agent for Widow Phoebe Farrar.[4]

Phoebe passed away after 1806, probably in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Her burial location remains unknown.[6]

I believe Phoebe's father and mother may have been George Young, (1730-1792, and Susannah Young (1730-1792). One of her children is obviously named after her father. Somebody may have this same information. I have George being born in Scotland, perhaps an immigrant, with Susannah being born in Virginia. Would love to know if others have this same information. Thanks! Sandy Donn
