Bill Younger was a talented saxophonist & vocalist, performing for & entertaining his community from about the age of 13 until he retired. During his Army tour as a communications lineman, he visited the Selmer Manufacturing Company in Paris, France. Where he was able to watch the creation process of his custom tenor saxophone.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home to Kansas & began working as a telephone lineman. Then as an electrician, quickly building his own company.
Bill was a family man & remained ever-close to his immediate & extended family, he was active in genealogy and an avid rock collector. He is the loving father of 8 children.
William H "Bill" Younger, 69, Hays, died May 20, 1998, at his home.
He was born Jan 16, 1929, in Ransom to Michael and Seraphine (Bieker) Younger, the family moved to Ellis County in the early 1940's. He was a U.S. Army veteran from 1951 to 1953. He served in Special Services where he helped establish communications for Radio Free Europe.
He married Karen St Clair Raney on May 19, 1965. He worked for Harry Marx telephone Co prior to joining the Army. He was an electrician and worked for Schwaller Electric and Established his own company, Younger Electric, in 1966. He retired in 1992.
He was a farmer and stockman and a musician, playing in various polka and western bands, his last being the Younger Brothers' Band. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Hays Area Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, William, Seattle, Raymond, Modesto, CA, and Michael, Hays; five daughters, Juanita "Nita" Younger, Clifton, NJ, Kathleen Wudarccyk, Norfolk, VA, Deborah Hathcock, Oakdale, CA, Kimberly King and Denise Purdy, both of Hays; two brothers, Walter, Munjor, and Donald, Ellis; a sister, Lillian Reynolds, Sunrise Beach, MO; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Michael and Bob; three sisters, Evelyn Stremel, Edna Erbert and Viola Sullivan; and a grandson.
Services were May 23 at St Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, with Fathers Earl Befort and Paulinus Karlin officiating; burial with military honors by the Hays American Legion and VFW in St Joseph Cemetery.
Hays Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the oncology unit in Hays Medical Center for training on lymphedema.
