Entered Marine Corp in 1937, fought in WW2 and Korea. Moved up the ranks to Major. He was a Mustang Marine. Moving up ranks by experience not school. Retired before Vietnam. Worked at the base in a fire station. Passed away from a heart attack while working in his yard.

Joe Zarling stormed the beach of Guadalcanal and the beach of Tarawa in WW2. He also fought in Korea. He married Dorothy Francis Quinn and had 5 children. He settled in California after retirement until his death in 1977.
