Her father died when she was two. She worked in a peppermill to help her mother Anna Zell financially.
When the Hastings moved to Highspire, the majority of the family joined the United Brethren church. One daughter, Sarah, joined the Church of God.

According to a Nov 1981 letter from Ella Mae Schiefer, Frances' granddaughter, several of the Miller family and an Aunt Sallie visited from time to time during the summer vacation. Frances daughter, Sarah, was probably named after Aunt Sallie.
Frances Hastings' Obituary:
Mrs. Hastings, 70, of Highspire, Dies
Highspire, March 1--- Private funeral services for Mrs. Frances E. Hastings, 70, wife of William H. Hastings, who died at her home yesterday afternoon, 70 Charles Street, Highspire, will be held Wednesday afternoon at her home.
Mrs. Hastings is survived by her husband, a sister, Mrs. Mary Haskett, of Wilmington, Delaware, and the following sons and daughters, George Hastings, of Detroit; Robert Hastings, of Highspire; Edgar Hastings, of Uniontown; Mrs. N.E. Bingaman, Mrs. Irvin Ruth, Mrs. Clyde Etter and Mrs. Ralph Sites, of Highspire.
Eleven grandchildren also survive. Burial will be made in the Highspire Cemetery. The body may be viewed at the residence tomorrow night from 7 to 9 o'clock and Wednesday morning.
A hand written note by daughter Hetty beside the obituary read: Mother was from Mt. Holly Springs, Penna. Daughter of Thomas & Annie Zell. Mother died Feb 28-1926, the day after I was 25 years old.
