Biography

Notables Project
Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. is Notable.

Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. (March 21, 1867 - July 22, 1932), popularly known as "Flo" Ziegfeld, was an American Broadway impresario, notable for his series of theatrical revues, the Ziegfeld Follies (1907–1931), inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris. He also produced the musical Show Boat. He was known as the "glorifier of the American girl". Flo Ziegfeld is a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame.

It became obvious that Flo had a talent for promotion when, as a child, he sold tickets to the neighborhood kids to see his school of "invisible fish" - which was just a glass bowl filled with water.

In 1893, Flo's father sent him to Europe to find talent in the form of classical musicians and orchestras. He returned with the Von Bulow Military Band and Eugene Sandow, “the world’s strongest man.” He managed Sandow during the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago.

In 1896, Flo went in to theatrical management. He promoted Anna Held, with press releases about her milk baths and brought her fame, setting a pattern of star-making through publicity.

Florenz and Anna were a couple from 1897 to 1913. They had a common-law marriage and she divorced him, claiming he was having an affair with actress Lillian Lorraine.

He married actress Billie Burke in 1914.

Florenz took huge loses in the stock market crash of the early 1930s. His revival of Show Boat opened in 1932. It was a huge success and saved him from bankruptcy.

Florenz died of pleurisy. It seems he had never fully recovered from a bout of pneumonia over the previous winter.
