He was born near Old Fort in Center County, August 19, 1816, the son of an impoverished, German American farmer, sometime blacksmith, whose successive moves through rural Pennsylvania failed to bring him much success. In 1830 the family settled in Venango County in northwestern Pennsylvania where Henry Ziegler worked, clearing forests, chopping wood, forging iron tools, and thereby helping to provide for his family. Baptized when he was a child, Ziegler's youth was typical of those living rugged lives in rural America in the first half of the nineteenth century. Religious excitement was a "sometime thing," depending on sporadic visits by missionary clergy. At the age of eighteen, after a walk of eight miles to the services of a Cumberland Presbyterian minister, Ziegler was converted and subsequently catechized by a Lutheran home missionary." After his conversion, Ziegler had a strong conviction that he was called to preach the gospel but he had virtually no resources to prepare for it. He turned to the Parent Education Society of the General Synod, which gave him $100 as one of its first beneficiaries. In 1835, Ziegler strapped his possessions on his back and walked over 150 miles to Gettysburg, where he enrolled in the Preparatory Department of Pennsylvania College. One year later he entered the college itself, and, although his studies were interrupted several times by the need to work and raise funds, Ziegler managed to graduate and moved on to the Gettysburg Seminary, from which he graduated in 1843."
