Paul Zimmer in Fatal Accident: Respected Big Grove Farmer Dies from Injuries Received in Haying Accident Saturday

A terrible accident, which resulted in his death, befell Paul Zimmer, one of the leading farmers of Big Grove Township, last Saturday morning at about 8:30am.

In driving into the barn it was necessary for him to dodge two cross beams. He dodged the first one by laying down, but the second one struck him squarely on the head throwing it back and breaking his neck. This also had the effect of paralyzing his whole body from the shoulders down.

Dr. Carle of Garrison was called who rushed to the Zimmer home as fast as his auto would take him. He immediately telephoned for Dr. C.C. Griffin, Sr. and Drs. Crawford and Morrison of Cedar Rapids. Dr. Griffen arrived there within a short time and the other Drs. got there as soon as an automobile could get there from Cedar Rapids. It was decided to have an operation and in the afternoon an operation was performed to remove the fractured bone from the spine. It brought only temporary relief and Mr. Zimmer died about 3:00am Sunday morning.

Mr. Zimmer owned and operated what is known as the Peter Forney farm in Big Grove Township. It is three miles southeast of Garrison.

He was a man of between 55 and 60 years of age. He was a married man with a family.
