Biography

When Dr. John Perkins ZIMMERMAN was born in 1802 in South Carolina, his father, Colonel, was 39 and his mother, Mary, was 24. He married Mary Caroline DUBOSE in 1829 in South Carolina. They had eight children in 19 years. He died on February 6, 1863, at the age of 61.

In 1850, Jno P. Timmerman was 47 years old and lived in Darlington, South Carolina.

In 1860, Jno P. Zimmerman was 57 years old and lived in Darlington, South Carolina.

Dr. J. P. Zimmerman, 26 Mar 1802 to 6 Feb 1863 John Perkins Zimmerman was born in Darlington District, South Carolina, the son of Colonel William and Mary Dozier Zimmerman. The doctor may have attended the noted Ebenezer Academy near his home; his early education must have been thorough - while still in his teens, he was private tutor the children on several plantations surrounding his father's "Jack's Bay" place. He entered the South Carolina College, graduating with an A.B degree in 1821; he studied medicine at the South Carolina Medical Collage, receiving his degree in the Class of 1827. Dr. Zimmerman located in Darlington, SC, immediately after graduation, and during a long career was prominently identified with the religious, social and political life of the village and district. For many years he was a steward and district trustee of the Methodist Church; trustee of the Sanders Fund; member of the Darlington Bible Society; member of the Pee Dee Medical Association; and Senator from Darlington District in the South Carolina Legislature in 1852-1860. About 1829, Dr. Zimmerman married Mary Caroline DuBose; their children were William E.; Danial A.who became a physician and practiced in Darlington; Mary Elizabeth; John W.; Caroline DuBose, who married W. E. Charles; Dozier Perkins; Timothy Dargan; and Samuel Isaiah.

Page 624 of "History of the Old Cheraws": Extracts from a letter of Miss Elizabeth Zimmerman to the Secretary of the Pee Dee Historical Society: John Perkins, a native of Kershaw. Margaret Perkins, daughter of John Perkins, married first, James Dozier, of Georgetown. There were two children of this marriage: Mary Dozier, who married William F. Zimmerman, and James Dozier, who died in infancy. Mary Dozier Zimmerman had a large family: James Dozier, William F., John Perkins, Daniel, Eliza (Mrs. T. J. Flinn), Sarah (Mrs. W. R. Davis, and Malvina (who died in infancy). Margaret [Perkins] Dozier, married the second time, Colonel Keith of Georgetown, and had two daughters, Lydia Keith and Harriet Keith.
