Biography

John was born about 1832. He was the son of John Zimmerman and Margaret Cook. He is shown as their eldest child on the 1850 US Census for Marion, Pike, Ohio (18). He has 3 younger siblings: Elizabeth (13), Margaret (11) and Lewis (9).

He married Elizabeth Mossbarger on Sep 16, 1852 in Pike, Ohio. They had 11 children. He was a farmer.

The 1860 Census for Pike, Ohio lists John (27) and wife Elizabeth (25) and 4 children: Rufus (6), Elizabeth (5), Margaret (2) and John D (4/12).

On the same page of the 1860 Census is listed Henry Zimmerman (23) and wife Virginia (23) and their children Mary (3) and William Henry (1). Henry is likely John’s brother. Also on the same page are Henry Dykes (39) and wife Sarah (34) and children Charles (13), Moses (11), John (9), Minerva (5) and Zachariah (1). Sarah is John Zimmerman’s half-sister. They have the same mother.

In June 1863 a John Zimmerman was drafted as a Union Soldier in the Civil War. Unlike his younger brother Andrew Lewis, John survived the war. He served as a private.

On the 1870 US Census for Marion, Pike, Ohio John Zimmerman (39) and wife Elizabeth (37) are shown with children Rufus (16), Elisabeth (14), Margret (12), Emily W (9), Sarah (4), Perry (3), Matilde (1) and Susan (4/12).

In 1880, the US Census for Auglaize, Logan, Ohio lists John Zimmerman (48), wife Elizabeth (44) and children Rufus (25), Emily W (18), Sarah (14), Matilda (11), Susan (10), Charles (8), William (5) and Cora (1).

He passed away about 1897.
