Biography

Wilhelmina Zuelke was born 12 Mar 1840[1][2] in Deutsch Krone, West Prussia (modern day Walcz, Zachodniopomorskie, Poland). She was likely educated in her youth, because all of the census enumerations in which she appears show her as being able to read and write. The 1900 census had her not speaking English yet, but the subsequent ones recorded her as being able to speak English.[3]

In 1868[3] she married[3][4][5][6][7] Julius Carl Howe. To their union were born:

  1. Jerry Howe (1869-?)
  2. Emil Howe (1869-1937)
  3. Paul R Howe (1872-1948)[8]
  4. Julius Howe Jr. (1872-1949)[6][9]
  5. Wilhelm M Howe (1876-?)][3][6][9]
  6. Albert Carl Howe (1878-1964)[3][6][9]
  7. William Howe (1880-?)
  8. Augusta S Howe (1881-1931)[3][4][5][10][6][9]

Wilhelmina was living in Netzthal, Westpreußen, when she immigrated to the United States with four of her children--Julius, Wilhelm, Albert, and Augusta. On 23 Sep 1887, they departed Hamburg, Germany, aboard the German ship Harrsa. Neither Julius Carl nor her two older children (Emil and Paul) was with them on the ship, so it is likely they came earlier and then sent for them.

They moved to Concord Township, Dodge, Minnesota, in about 1891. They were still living there during the 1895 Territorial census[9] and 1900 general census.[3] Wilhelmina was captured twice in the 1895 census. In addition to the enumeration where she was living with her husband, she is found living with the family of her son Paul.[11]

She and her husband were naturalized in 1897.[5]

1910 found them living in La Mars Township, Richland, North Dakota.[4]

They returned to Minnesota and were living in Columbia Heights, Anoka, Minnesota, in 1920.[5] After Julius Carl died in 1924, she moved in with her daughter Augusta's family, where she was living in 1930.[10]

She died on 14 Dec 1933[1][2] in Dodge Center, Dodge, Minnesota, USA.[1][2] She was buried in Riverside Cemetery[1] in Dodge County, Minnesota.
