Volga German
Johannes Zulauf is a Volga German.
Johannes Zulauf has German Roots.

Family #141 in the 1775 Grimm census.
Family #132 in the 1798 Grimm census.
Family #32 in the 1834 Grimm census.

Johannes was born about 1748 in the Darmstadt, Germany area to parents Heinrich Zulauf and Anna Katharina (Unknown) Zulauf. He had six siblings, all born in Germany.

The family immigrated to Russia in 1766, arriving in St. Petersburg on 29 August 1766. [1] He and his siblings are identified there as:

Kulberg Reports Wife named as Susanna (should be Catharina) [1]

Child #1 Johannes Zulauf, age 18
Child #2 Conrad Zulauf, age 14
Child #3 Anna Zulauf, age 11
Child #4 Maria Zulauf, age 7
Child #5 Anna Maria Zulauf, age 4

There were two Johann Zulaufs listed one after the other in the Kulberg reports, which triggered a census taker error regarding the name of his mother.

He and his family survived the journey to the Volga River region and eventually settled in Grimm. They are listed among the first settlers of the village.

1767 Grimm Census [2]

Johannes married Sophia Gertrude Bierman by 1773, and the couple had their first child, Katharina, in late 1774 or early 1775. The family lived with Gertrude's family since she had no brothers to help her father care for his farming property.

By 1798 the family was living in Galka, presumably temporarily since they are still listed in the 1798 Grimm census. Daughter Katharina is not included in this listing; she was probably married and living with her husband's family.
