Biography

Volga German
Johann Zulauf is a Volga German.
Johann Zulauf has German Roots.

Johann Zulauf was born about 1729 in the Darmstadt, Germany, area. He married Anna Katharina by 1747, probably also in the Darmstadt area.

Johann is listed in the Kulberg Reports under the name Johann Zulauf. [1] Listed just above his name is another Johann Zulauf whose wife was Susanna. The men can be distinguished by their children, all who had similar but not identical names and ages. Here are the entries for the two men, in the exact order in which they appear in the Kulberg Reports.

Kulberg Reports #1 Wife named as Susanna [1]

This is not the correct Johann Zulauf.

Johann Zulauf, Lutheran, smith from Darmstadt, document number 3632, wife Susanna
Child #1 Johannes Zulauf, age 18
Child #2 Conrad Zulauf, age 14
Child #3 Anna Zulauf, age 11
Child #4 Maria Zulauf, age 7
Child #5 Anna Maria Zulauf, age 4

The following entry is a match with the Johann Zulauf of this profile. It is the second listing in the Kulberg Reports.

Kulberg Reports #2 Wife named Catharina [1]

Johann Zulauf, Lutheran, smith from Darmstadt, document 3633, wife: Catharina
Child #1 Johann Zulauf, age 15
Child #2 Georg Zulauf, age 13
Child #3 Heinrich Zulauf, age 11
Child #4 Anna Zulauf, age 18
Child #5 Maria Zulauf, age 7

In the 1767 Grimm census, there is only one Zulauf family, and his is a match for the first Johann Heinrich Zulauf, not for the Johann Zulauf of this profile. [2] The Johann Zulauf of this profile may have lived in another colony at this time. The determining factors in distinguishing the men were the names of their children. The children named in the 1767 correspond to the other Johann Heinrich Zulauf.

The children of the Johann Zulauf of this profile were:

  • Johann Zulauf, born 1752, by first wife
  • Georg Zulauf, born 1754, by first wife
  • Heinrich Zulauf, born 1755, by first wife
  • Anna Zulauf, born 1749, by first wife
  • Maria Zulauf, born 1760, by first wife
  • Johann Adam Zulauf, born 1775, by second wife

I cannot find this family in any Volga German village. It's not clear if they all passed away before any censuses were taken, or if they returned to Germany. He should not be confused with the other Johann Heinrich Zulauf who settled in Grimm.

Zulauf-86 and Zulauf-84 do not represent the same person because: These are two different men, probably brothers, who traveled together when they immigrated from Germany to Russia. See page 238 of: Pleve, Igor. List of Colonists to Russia in 1766, "Reports by Ivan Kulberg," Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation, Saratov State Technical University; Published in Saratov, Russia 2010.

Zulauf-86 and Zulauf-84 appear to represent the same person because: same name, exact same spouse (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-381219), born similar year, born same location, exact same father, same death year/location
