Elisabeth (Zulauf) Schanzenbach is a Volga German.
Elisabeth (Zulauf) Schanzenbach has German Roots.
Family #69 in the 1767 Grimm census.
Family #126 in the 1775 Grimm census.
Family #Gk41 in the 1798 Galka census.
Maria Elisabeth Zulauf was born about 1758 in the Darmstadt area of what is now Germany, to parents Johann Heinrich Zulauf and his wife Susanna (Unknown) Zulauf. Her birth year is based on her age in the Kulberg Reports. Here is the family's entry.
The family traveled from Luebeck, Germany, to Russia on 29 August 1766.
Ages are not noted for the adults, which created a problem with matching his wife Susanna with his wife [wives] in Grimm.
By the time of the first census in Grimm, Johann Heinrich Zulauf's wife's name is Anna Katharina, age 39, the same age as he was.
By the time of the 1775 Grimm census, her father's wife is named Anna Mara and she is 2 years younger than her husband.
This would have been her stepmother. Her father's name does not appear in the 1798 census. The Johann Zulauf listed there in family #132 is her brother of the same name.
These mothers and/or stepmothers are mentioned only because it presents a problem when identifying the mother of Maria Elisabeth. It seems like her probable mother is Susanna, named as her mother in the Kulberg Reports. This is fine, unless we think there was a intake error and the wrong name was used. In the Kulberg Reports and 1775 censuses, children were identified as stepchildren or belonging to one mother or the other if the father was married more than once. That is not the case in the Zulauf census entries. Neither the Kulberg Reports nor the 1775 census mention any possible other mothers for the children. There is the possibility that Maria Elisabeth's mother's name was Susanna Maria, but that was certainly not a common Volga German name. Nor is Susanna Anna Maria or Anna Maria Susanna.
