Biography

Jacob Zuppinger was born at Fischenthal about 1516, married Weybrot about 1540 and lived in the hamlet of Boden, one of several farm hamlets in the parish. Jacob and Weybrot had eight children baptized in the church at Fischenthal and he died in a great "pestilence" that struck the village in the fall of 1567. Jacob was probably the son of Vinzenz Zuppinger, who also lived at Boden and perished in the epidemic of 1567. Vinzenz was a son of Rudolph Zuppinger, who settled in the Fischenthal (a valley east of the city of Zurich) by 1469 and in 1521, with his six sons, became hereditary tenants of the "Wydem" (literally "consecrated"), a large tract of farm land, one of many, that belonged to the monastery at Rüti. a town further south. According to this agreement they were to have use and occupancy of the land in return for certain annual rental fees of money and produce, and they had to pasture cattle belonging to the monastery. All six sons had rights to the land after the death of their father. Not long after that the Protestant Reformation occurred and monastaries were abolished. The "Wydum" in Fischenthal became property of the new Reformed Church and members of the Zuppinger family remained tenants but now had to pay rents to the Church. Not all of the six sons stayed in the Fischenthal. Three went elsewhere, but the three remaining divided up the property, Zinzenz, took the farm called Boden, Wilhelm, took Oberhof, ( the area around the church) and Jacob took a farm called Aurüti.
