Biography

Louis Philippe Joseph d'Orléans, commonly known as Philippe, was a French prince, cousin of King Louis XVI, and father of Louis-Philippe, later King of the French.

The Duke or Orléans actively supported the Revolution of 1789, and was a strong advocate for the elimination of the absolute monarchy in favor of a constitutional monarchy. In 1792, he changed his name to Philippe Égalité. He voted for the death of King Louis XVI. However, Philippe-Égalité was himself guillotined in November 1793 during the Reign of Terror.

Louis Philippe Joseph, duc de Chartres, son of Louis-Philippe, duc d'Orléans and Louise-Henriette de Bourbon-Conti, was born on 13 April 1747. He received preliminary baptism rites the day of his birth at the Château de Saint-Cloud. He received full baptism rites on 18 November 1759 in the royal chapel at Versailles. His godfather was Louis, King of France and Navarre, his godmother was Marie, Princess of Poland, Queen of France and Navarre.[1] He had one younger sister, Bathilde.

Prince Loüis Philippe Joseph d'Orléans, duc de Chartres, son of Prince Loüis Philippe, duc d'Orléans, and the deceased Princesse Loüise Henriette de Bourbon Conty, married Loüise Marie Adélaide de Bourbon on 5 April 1769 in Versailles. The ceremony was attended by Louis, King of France and Navarre; Louis Auguste, Dauphin; Louis Stanislas Xavier de France, comte de Provence; Charles Philippe de France, comte d'Artois; Marie Adélaïde de France; Victoire Louise Marie Thérèse de France; Sophie Philippine Elisabeth Justine de France; Louise Marie de France; Louis-Philippe, duc d'Orléans, father of the groom; Louise-Elisabeth de Bourbon, princesse de Conti, his grandmother, and Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, duc de Penthièvre, father of the bride.[2] The couple had the following children:

  1. A daughter (died at birth, 10 October 1771);
  2. Louis-Philippe, became King of the French in 1830;
  3. Antoine Philippe, duke of Montpensier (1775-1807);
  4. Françoise, Mademoiselle d'Orléans (1777–1782);
  5. Adélaïde, Mademoiselle de Chartres, her twin (1777-1847);
  6. Louis Charles, count of Beaujolais (1779-1808).

Philippe had numerous mistresses and is attributed several illegitimate children.

Louis-Philippe-Joseph Égalité, 46 years old, député, born at Saint-Cloud, was guillotined on 16 Brumaire year II (6 November 1793) in Paris. The reconstitution of his death act bears the mention vu l'extrait du jugement du Tribunal Révolutionnaire et du procès verbal d'exécution en date du seize de ce mois.[3]

Philippe d'Orléans was a member of the Jacobin faction and advocated and voted against feudalism and slavery. He was also the Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Orient de France.

Family connections between Louis XVI and Philippe Égalité

  • Philippe Égalité and Louis XVI were both descendants of Louis XIV. Philippe was the great-grandson of Louis XIV's illegitimate daughter Françoise-Marie, duchesse d'Orléans, on both his mother and his father's sides. Louis XVI was Louis XIV's third great-grandson.
  • They were both direct male-line descendants of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. Louis XVI was Louis XIII's fourth great-grandson, Philippe was his third great-grandson through Philippe, duke of Orléans, younger brother of Louis XIV.
  • They were both descendants of Philippe, duke of Orléans, who was Philippe-Égalité's second great-grandfather, and Louis XVI's third great-grandfather though Marie-Adélaïde de Savoie, mother of king Louis XV.
