The Suffolk County news., Friday, March 22, 1946, Page 7 A pretty church wedding took place on Friday evening at six 'o 'clock when Miss Florence Slager, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Marinus Slager of this village, became the bride of Harvey De Vries of McBain, Mich. in the local Christian Reformed Church at a double ring ceremony, with the Rev Dewey Holtenga officiating. The church wan decorated with baskets of colored snapdragons and palms. Mrs. Charles Seerveld, cousin of the bride, sang Oh Promise Me before the ceremony and during the ceremony sang Because and Oh Perfect Love, accompanied by Miss Mary Van Wyen, organist, of the church, who also played the wedding marches. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white satin with a sweetheart neckline and a fingertip veil held in place by a headed coronet. She wore a string of pearls and carried white calla lilies . The maid of honor was Miss Katherine Sluiter, who wore an aqua gown of taffeta with a sweetheart neckline and matching face veil. She carried a spray of yellow snapdragons. Miss Jeanne Slager, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid and wore a yellow gown of talfeta with a sweetheart neckline and matching face veil. She carried a spray of rose snapdragons. Anita Slager, niece of the bride, was flower girl and wore a gown of yellow taffeta. She wore yellow flowers in her hair and carried an old- fashioned bouquet of sweetpeas. The bride's mother wore a grey print dress with black accessories and a corsage of gardenias. The groom had as his best man his brother-in-law, Bart Brink of Cadillac, Mich. . Ushers were Walter Overton and James Slager. Following the ceremony a reception for the Immediate family and close friends was field at The Milestone in Sayville. As her traveling costume, the bride wore a brown suit with brown accessories. Mr. and Mrs. De Vries are spending their honeymoon upstate. Mrs. De Vries is a graduate of Sayville High School and before her marriage was employed in the People's Bank in Patchogue. Mr De Vries was recently discharged from the Army after three years of service. He was with the 101st Airborne Division , and spent 13 months overseas in Europe, Mr. De Vries has taken a job with the Southside Dairy in West Sayville and expects to begin work with them in the near future.

DE VRIES Harvey J. DeVries, age 88, of Cutlerville, went to be with his Lord on Friday, June 10, 2011. He was born July 13, 1922 to John H. and Minnie (Berens) DeVries of Lucas, MI. An Army veteran of WWII, Harvey was a sharpshooter with the 101st Airborne, 506th Parachute Infantry. He worked as a dairy farmer and later retired as a salesman for Fire Island Fisheries of Long Island, NY. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald; and his sisters, Wilhelmina Brinks, Anne Brinks, Helen Zinger, and Minnette Ellens. Surviving are his wife, Florence (Slager); children, Jacquelyn Amelse of Dyer, IN, Virginia (Russell) Bredeweg of Wayland, MI, Kevin (Robyn) DeVries of Bayshore, NY, and Kimberly Dowling of Moline, MI; grandchildren, Kristin (Kevin) Mitchell, Kelly (Timothy) Rosi, Jodi (Kevin) Fox, Jack (Alishia) Bredeweg, Brittany and Alexandra DeVries, Justin, Peter, Ryan, and Marissa Dowling; great grandchildren, Kathryn, Parker, Jacob, and Juliane Rosi, baby Mitchell, Kyle, Kelsey, and Samantha Fox, Collin and Kaden Bredeweg; brother, Rev. Jay (Norma) DeVries; sisters, Margie (Marvin) Koetje, Jessie (Bernie) Wheelock, Betty (George) Groen; brothers-in-law, Sy (Jan) Ellens, Nelson Slager; sister-in-law, Jean VanderVeen. The Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Stroo Funeral Home, with Rev. Calvin VanderMeyden officiating. Interment in Kent Memorial Gardens.
