I emigrated to Australia with my parents Adrianus and Geerdina in 1957. landed in Fremantle on 1957/10/25. continued to Melbourne on the Johan van Oldenbarneveldt. Then we were transferred via overland train to Adelaide. We stayed in the Woodside camp for several days before being transferred to the Glenelg Migrant Hostel where we lived in Nissan huts for several months before my parents rented a house at 5 Gloucester Ave Belair. I only went to school for 1 week in Glenelg until the school holidays. I had no idea how to communicate with the other children and refused to go back (13.1/2 years of age) my parents found a position for me through the local priest helping a couple in their home. Luckily I was well treated and traveled extensively with them until I was married at age 21. I have no idea now how I learned to read and write English. I used to have books and dictionaries and looked up every word I couldn't understand.
