Biography

Joseph Thomas was born circa 1792 and baptised Joseph Thomas Walker in St Andrew Holborn Church, London, England, the son of Richard and Martha Walker.[1]

Joseph married Louisa Gill on 25 June 1816 in St. Matthew's Church, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England.[2]

The couple is thought to have had a total of seven children. The first three children were baptised within a month of their births all in St Dunstan Stepney in Middlesex while the family were residing in Mile End Old Town [M.E.O.T]. Just before their fourth child was baptised in 1822 the family appear to have relocated, a pattern that continued with each subsequent child but always within Middlesex. The baptism after 1822 was located in 1849 when their daughter Louisa gets baptised at the age of 21 with her younger sister Hannah in Holy Trinity, Hoxton, Hackney, England. No evidence has yet been found of the remaining two male children getting baptised

Their children were:

  1. George Walker (1817 - ) baptised 25 May 1817 in St Dunstan Stepney, Middlesex.
  2. Henry Walker (1819 - ) baptised 8 October 1820 in St Dunstan Stepney, Middlesex.
  3. Joseph Walker (1822 - ) baptised on 15 September 1822 in St Dunstan Stepney, Middlesex.
  4. James Walker (~1825 - ) born Poplar, Middlesex, according to the 1851 census but unable to locate his baptismal record
  5. Louisa (Walker) Williamson (1828 - 1901) born in Islington, Middlesex baptised on 20 April 1849 in Holy Trinity, Hoxton, Hackney, England
  6. Alfred Walker (~1832 - 1913) born in Hackney, Middlesex, according to the 1851 census but unable to locate the baptismal record
  7. Hannah (Walker) Bowen (1834 - 1902). Born Hackney, Middlesex baptised 20 April 1849 in Holy Trinity, Hoxton, Hackney, England

Research Notes

Place & Date of Birth – 1792 in London possibly in Middlesex which is supported by the 1841, 1851 & 1861 Censuses and Joseph’s baptismal record.

Date of Death - It is thought that Joseph died between 1871 and 1881 as he is no longer living with his married daughter and has not been located in the 1881 Census. A search for the death of a Joseph Walker between 1871 and 1881 aged between 69 and 79 reveals the following possibilities in Middlesex which don’t seem good matches as they weren’t old enough when they died

  • Joseph Burdett WALKER aged 72 Deaths Sep 1873, Pancras, 1b, 37 [born circa 1802] seems unlikely as Burdett is not a middle name he has used before
  • Joseph Walker, aged 73, Deaths Sep 1878, Hackney, 1b, 331 [born circa 1805]
  • Joseph Walker, aged 75, Deaths Mar 1877, Hackney, 1b, 310 [born circa 1802]
  • Joseph Walker, aged 76, Deaths Mar 1879, Marylebone, 1a, 483 [born circa 1803]

Expanding the search outside Middlesex there are several more candidates but the most likely one is a Joseph Walker who died aged 84 Deaths Jun 1878 Islington, 1b, 146 [born circa 1794] who seems to be the most likely candidate based on the above search parameters, however, without seeing the death certificate it is impossible to know if this is the correct death.

It is also possible that Joseph moved over to the district to live with another decent before he died.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
