Biography

Axel Jacob Österberg was born on October 9, 1820 in Katarina parish in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the oldest child of shipowner and wholesaler (sv. skeppare och grosshandlare) Claes Fredrik Österberg and his wife Carolina Hägg. They lived at Stadsgården nr 1, kvarteret Glasblåsaren Nedre when he was born. He was christened on November 11, 1820 in Katarina parish.[1]

The family lived in kvarteret Bejers trädgårdar in Katarina parish in 1830. [2]

His mother passed away when he was 10 years old, and Axel Jacob and his younger siblings were sent to their maternal grandmother Cajsa Maria Hägg neé Dubbe in Katthamra gård in Katthammarsvik, Östergarn parish, Gotland, Sweden.[3]

His father remained in Stockholm and passed away in 1846.

Axel Jacob was raised in Gotland at his grandmother's. He spent three years in the Navy at Skeppsholmen 1840-1843, but was "dismissed for dishonesty, but not punished". He went back to Gotland and registered with the Visby Seaman's House on July 19, 1843. He worked as jungman jungman. He is noted as seaman 1844-1847 in his grandmother's household, and then "Abroad 1847."

He is noted to have absconded in March 1848 from the schooner/skonerten "Experiment" in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.[4][5]

There is a gap of 13 years until we find him again in Swedish household books. Perhaps he was at sea the whole time.

He must have been unemployed as we find him next at Allmänna Arbetsinrättningen, a Stockholm workhouse, in June/July 1861. He is noted "to America" on July 22, 1861.
