Biography

Siri was born in 1826 at Øvrebø farm on Borgundøy in Fjelberg clerical district in Hordaland, Norway, the daughter of Tollak Tjærandsen Øvrebø and Torborg Jonsdatter (Alne) Hauge. Siri grew up at Øvrebø, and when she was 24 in 1849, she married Tjærand Throndsen Arnevig in Fjelberg. They started their family the following year, which would total ten children. In 1854, Tjærand purchased the Gravdal farm on the eastern side of Halsnøy island in Fjelberg. In 1866, they joined the growing emigration to America, settling finally near Huxley in Palestine township, Story County, Iowa. There were many others in the area from Fjelberg, and the church is even named the Fjeldberg Lutheran church. Siri americanized her name to Sarah, and her husband took the name Charles Arendts (also spelled as Arntz, Arndts). Charles worked as a farm worker. Sarah died at Huxley in 1882 after a fall down stairs. She is reportedly buried in the Fjeldberg cemetery there.
