Aron, illegitimate son of Juda Leib Kurzer & Etie Chaje Rautner of Stryj, Galicia, was born there on 16 Apr 1890.[1]
Aron Kurtzer (aged 23) arrived in the US at the Port of New York aboard the SS Barbarossa on 21 Feb 1914. He was described as 5'8" with brown hair & eyes, & was going to meet his brother Elias in Providence, Rhode Island, leaving his father Juda Leib as who he listed as his closest relative back home in Stryj.[2]
Aron, now going by Arnold, married Sophie Kanefsky on 27 March 1917 at Providence, RI.[3]
Kurtzer was registered for the draft on 5 Jun 1917, at which time he was employed as a carpet layer for Joseph Marcus.[4]
Aron "Arnold" Kurtzer declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States on 10 Dec 1917.[5]
In the 1920 Census, Arnold & Sophie were living at 118 State Street in Providence with their daughter Ethel, & he still listed his occupation as carpet layer.[6] The couple moved to 1916 Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn, NY later that year, where they lived when Arnold submitted his petition for naturalization in 1923.[7]
At the time of the 1925 Census, Arnold & Sophie were still living on Rockaway, but Arnold was now listed as working as a casket dealer.[8]
In 1927, the first known newspaper mention of Arnold as a cantor was published. According to the Times Union of 4 Apr 1927, the Oher Sholom Temple in Canarsie, Brooklyn elected officers for the year, & Kurtzer sang during the program & "offered his services for the coming Easter holidays," which was accepted by newly-elected President Albert Faust.[9]
By the 1930 Census, Arnold & Sophie had had another daughter, & had relocated to 1597 St John's Place, where he was listed as now being the proprietor of a linoleum shop.[10]
In 1936, now going by his Hebrew name again, Kurtzer, described as a "well-known New York cantor," conducted services for Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur for the Congregation Agodath Achim in Bradley Beach, NJ, where he was said to have conducted services several times before.[11]
In the 1940 Census, Kurtzer (listed as Arnold again) was back at 1916 Rockaway, working as a salesman, & had had a son.[12]
At the time of the 1942 "Old Man's" draft, Kurtzer was working for "Re-Nu Carpet Cleaning" in Brooklyn, & was described as wearing glasses.[13]
In 1943, Kurtzer (now described as a Rabbi) officiated over at least two weddings, & a wedding anniversary, through his association as cantor with Congregation People of Righteousness, located on Ingram Street in Yonkers, NY.[14][15][16]
Aron Kurtzer died in Yonkers on 21 Nov 1945 at the age of 55.[17] He was buried at Montefiore Cemetery.[18]
