Date Junnosuke was born in Japan on 6 January 1892. He was known for his involvement in the Manchu and Mongol independence movements and the Shandong autonomy movement under his Chinese name of Chang Tsung-yüan. In 1931, he renounced citizenship of the Empire of Japan and became a citizen of the Republic of China. After being found guilty of war crimes following the Second Sino-Japanese War, he was executed by firing squad at Tilanqiao Prison in Shanghai on 9 September 1948.
