She was a Japanese idol and winner of the talent show Star Tanjō! in Tokyo, Japan.
She was found in her gas-filled Tokyo apartment on 8 April 1986 in a closet, crying with slashed wrists. Even after intervention from her manager and a hospital visit, she was still unwell.
The same day, at the Sun Music Building, as her manager and other staff members at her agency discussed how to prevent a media scandal, Yukiko ran to the top floor of the building, removed her shoes, and jumped, resulting in instant death.
The exact reason for her suicide is unknown, but it is suspected that she was wanting a relationship with Toru Minegishi, who previously rejected her.
Her fans were shocked and saddened by her untimely death. It sparked many copycat suicides across the country, eventually being coined "Yukiko Syndrome".
