Charles Kao was born in 1933 in Shanghai. He grew up in Hong Kong and studied in London.
He was a physicist who pioneered advancements in fiber optic communications technology. Among many awards, he received the Japan Prize in 1996 and a joint Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009[1].
He passed away in 2018.
On November 4, 2021, Google celebrated Kao's birthday with a Google Doodle.
