Biography

Park Geun-hye (Hangul: 박근혜, Hanja: 朴槿惠) was born in Taegu, Republic of Korea (South Korea) on 2 February 1952. She is the daughter and first child of Park Chung-hee with his second wife, Yuk Young-soo. Her father served as the 3rd President of the Republic of Korea from 1963 until his assassination in 1979. Before her presidency, Geun-hye led the Hannara Party from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2012. She also served in the National Assembly from 1998 to 2012.

Geun-hye was elected as the president of South Korea on 19 December 2012, making her the first woman to be elected president of South Korea as well as the first female president popularly elected as the head of state in East Asia. She was also the first South Korean president to be born after the founding of South Korea.

Geun-hye was inaugurated as the 11th President of the Republic of Korea on 25 February 2013. She was listed by Forbes on its list of the world's 100 most powerful women in 2013 and 2014, with the magazine placing her 11th worldwide as well as the most powerful in East Asia. In 2014, Forbes listed Geun-hye as the 46th in the world's most powerful people.

On 9 December 2016, Geun-hye was impeached on corruption charges by the National Assembly, and her term was suspended as a result. She was removed from office on 10 March 2017 by a unanimous 8-0 ruling by the Constitutional Court, making her the first South Korean president to be so removed. On 6 April 2018, South Korean courts sentenced Geun-hye to 24 years in prison (later increased to 25 years) for corruption and abuse of power.

Two separate criminal cases in 2018 resulted in an increase of seven years to Geun-hye's prison sentence. She was convicted of illegally taking off-the-book funds from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and given a sentence of five years. She was also convicted of illegal interference in the Saenuri Party primaries in the 2016 legislative election, which added two years to her prison sentence.

On 24 December 2021, Geun-hye received a pardon on compassionate grounds from her presidential successor. She was released from prison on 31 December.

Since this is a Korean name, as with East Asian names, the name display should be in family name-given name order, in this case 박 근혜 (Park Geun-hye). Due to WikiTree's technical limitations, this order is not supported as of yet.
