Biography

Claude Bonine is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Claude Calvin Bonine was born on his parents' farm near Manchester, Wakita Township, Grant County, Oklahoma Territory, USA on 20 November 1899. He was the oldest son of William Clinton Bonine and his first wife, Livera Pugh, who William C. Bonine had married in 1880, then divorced in 1882, and later remarried in February 1899. Claude had 5 older half "Bonine siblings" and 2 older half "Sparks siblings," growing up in a "patchwork-quilt-style" family on America's south-west frontier.

On the 1 June 1900 US Census, Claude C. Bonine was recorded as 6 months old (b: Nov. 1899), living with his parents, William C. Bonine, b: Jan. 1857, & wife, Livera C. Bonine, b: April 1859 in ED 77, Wakita, Grant, Oklahoma Territory. The household included Claude's 5 half-siblings: Gertie M. Bonine, b: Nov. 1886; Floyd E. Bonine, b: July 1890; Florence V. Bonine, b: April 1892, plus Roy F. Sparks, b: Nov. 1885; and Charley Sparks, b: Nov. 1890. His father was a "Farmer: General Farm" and his mother was reported to have had 3 children, including baby Claude, and all 3 of them were living with her in June 1900.[1]

Ten years later, the 15 April 1910 US Census recorded 10-year-old Claude C. Bonine as still living with his parents on their Wakita, Oklahoma, farm. Now he only had 2 siblings, older half-brother, Floyd E. Bonine, age 19, a "Farm Laborer," and younger full-sister, Jessie Lois Bonine, born 12 April 1901, living in the Bonine household.[2]

The Manchester Journal 7 Jun 1918 reported: "Claude Bonine left Monday for Wichita where he enlisted in the Mechanical Aviation Corps. Claude is under the draft age and deserves much credit for this act." https://www.newspapers.com/clip/39881579/the_manchester_journal/?xid=637&_ga=2.81560848.684910403.1592749125-1758453541.1592749125

On 12 September 1918, Claude Calvin Bonine registered for the US Army draft, as required by law, during World War I. His draft registration affirmed that he was 18 years old, a native-born American, single, and a "mechanic," who was "tall [with] brown hair & eyes; physically qualified [for military service]". His address was "General Delivery," Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma. [3]

No US Census record for 1920 has been found for Claude Calvin Bonine; he may have been joined his parents at his sister's home in Pecos, Texas, or simply not registered. Shortly after that Census was enumerated, his parents left Texas and bought land in Little River County, Arkansas. On 12 July 1922, Calvin C. Bonine married Effie W. Wilmeth, b: December 1899, in Winthrop, Little River County, Arkansas. [4] Effie was born F. A. Wilmeth; age 21, daughter of William Wilmeth, b: Jan. 1858 in Texas, and Mary "Molly" (Scalf) Wilmeth, b: Aug.1859 in Missouri. The family were recorded living in Arkinda Twp., Little River, Arkansas, on the 1 January 1920 US Census.[5][6][7]

On the 1930 US Census, Claude C. Bonine was recorded as 30 years old, married to 30-year-old Effie (Wilmeth) Bonine. They were living together on their family farm in Arkinda Township, Little River County, Arkansas, with their infant daughter, Corla C. Bonine, 7 months old (b: Sep 1929). Claude was a "Clerk: Grocery Store" there.[8]

The Lubbock Morning Avalanche 31 Dec 1937 reported the death of Effie (Wilmeth) Bonine's sister and recorded Claude Bonine as a pallbearer whose home was Arkinda, Ark. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/53219387/obituary-for-nellie-l-ingnun-aged-58/?xid=637&_ga=2.82036881.684910403.1592749125-1758453541.1592749125

Bonine, age 41, born in Texas, living with her and their 10-year-old daughter, Claudine Bonine, b: in Arkansas, in Ward 3, Ruston City, Police Jury Ward 1, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, United States. Claude Calvin Bonine was an "Inspector: Interstate Ties" for the Railway Company. The family had moved to Ruston City, Louisiana, after 1935 when they were still living in "Rural, Little River County, Arkansas". [9]

The Medford Patriot-Star 28 May 1959 reported: Claude Bonine of Kansas City, Mo. was a guest Friday of his aunt, Mrs. Clara Burchfiel. This is the first time they had met in 48 years." https://www.newspapers.com/clip/39742119/the_medford_patriotstar/?xid=637&_ga=2.157425853.684910403.1592749125-1758453541.1592749125
