Benning Wentworth was born on July 24, 1696 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire, son of John Wentworth (1671–1730) and Sarah Hunking (~1673–1741).

Marriage

Benning married first Abigail Rucke, daughter of John & Hannah (Hutchinson) Rucke, on 31 Sep 1719 - their children were John, Benning II & Foster

After the death of Abigail he married Martha Hilton, daughter of William & Joanna (Lane) Hilton, on 15 Mar 1760 - after the death of Benning she married Michael Wentworth, son of Matthew & Ann (Sill) Wentworth on 19 Dec 1770

Professional Life

As Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth lined his pockets selling land grants in what is now Vermont. He scandalized Portsmouth's elite in 1760 when he surprised his dinner guests by marrying his maid, Martha Hilton, then and there is his dining room." - New England Historical Society
