Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John Arnold, son of Richard and Mary (Angell) Arnold was born on November 1, 1670. [1] [2] [3]

He married first, about 1695 [1], Mary Mowry, the daughter of Nathaniel Mowry and Johannah Inman who was born in 1675. She died January 27, 1742, aged 67. [4] [3] [5]

He married second, October 31, 1742, Hannah Howard. [6] [2] [3]

He was a miller and lived in that part of Providence that became Smithfield, Rhode Island; was a member of the town council in Smithfield in 1731-32.

  • He was one of the organizers of the Society of Friends in Northern Rhode Island.
  • Built their first meeting house at this place.
  • One of the committee who run our northern boundary line in 1718.
  • He was the first President of the Council when Smithfield became a town in 1731 . [3]

He died October 27, 1756 in the eighty sixth year of his age. [2] He was buried in the burial ground on the Vose farm at the Globe Village. [3] His inscription reads: Here lies ye body of John Arnold Who Died October the :27 :1756 : in ye 86 year of his age. [7] [8]

His will was written May 5, 1753, and proved on 1 November 1756 in Smithfield, Rhode Island.[9] His date of death is recorded in the heading of his inventory which was taken on the 12, 13 and 17 of November 1756.

In it, he left bequests to:

  • three daughters Mary Lapham, Abagail Bartlett and Susanna Malavory L100 each
