Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Asher) Roberts was a North Carolina colonist.

Mary Millie Asher was a widow when she met Reuben Roberts. She arrived in the American colonies prior to the Revolutionary War (some histories say from New Orleans, then New France). It is unsure if her maiden name was Asher, or if this is the last name or her first husband.

Mary Millie and Reuben lived in Orange County, North Carolina after they were married in 1785. Four of their twelve children were born there. In 1791 they moved west over the Allegheny Mountains into Washington County and settled on the Watauga River near the present town of Elizabethton, Tennessee which is in Carter County. Mary and Reuben secured 50 acres of land and lived there until about 1802. Five of his children were born there after Tennessee became a state.

In about 1802, Mary and Reuben moved down the Wilderness Road to Anderson County, which was formed in 1801 after the Cherokee Indians were forced from this land. They settled on Brushy Fork of Popular Creek in Buckhorn Valley west of Black Oak Mountain about 10 miles south of Clinton, Tennessee in Anderson County. They acquired 50 acres, and lived in this valley for the next 10 years. The last three of their children were born at this location.

In 1810, Mary and Reuben's house burned down. This is documented in Reuben's Revolutionary War pension documents. About 1812, they moved to the Mud Creek area of Warren County, Tennessee. They eventually acquired about 270 acres of land.

Mary and Reuben donated three acres of land to build the Asbury Methodist Church and Cemetery. They are both buried at this cemetery.

On 2/19/1844, Mary Millie Roberts applied for a widow's pension based upon Reuben's war service. This was filed in Warren County. She did receive the pension, which was for $96 per year.

An alternate story about Mary's origin is that she is the daughter of Charles Asher, Sr, B 1740 Virginia D 1814 Reynolds County, Missouri Millie Hicks Asher, B 1730 Halifax County, Virginia, D 1814 Reynolds County, Missouri Marriage 1753 in Hogans Creek, Caswell County, North Carolina

Another story is When Mary Emily "Millie" Ashor was born in August 1769 in North Carolina, her father, Charles, was 29, and her mother, Milly, was 29. She married Reuben Derrith Roberts (Veterian of The American Revolution War) on August 17, 1785, in Orange, North Carolina. They had 18 children in 55 years. She died on March 14, 1847, in Warren, Tennessee, having lived a long life of 87 years, and was buried there. However dates need checking.

Ashor-3 and Asher-638 do not represent the same person because: NO MERGE. REMOVE YOUR ERROR. The mother of Roberts-26615 is NOT RELATED to this family. Thomas Roberts, son of Reuben and Milly Asher/Ashor, died and is buried in IOWA among some of his children. Proven. Documented. End of discussion. Please remove parents of your Thomas Roberts-26615 as he WAS NOT POSSIBLY related to this Reuben Roberts who fought in the NC militia in the Revolution. Sorry to disappoint you. We already have multiple D.A.R. members in this lineage under Thomas Robers, b. 2 MAR 1787 • Orange, North Carolina; d. 2 JUL 1867 • Jacksonville, Lucas, Iowa. His grave is on Findagrave.com by the way.
