Biography

Francois Azure was born at Moose Mountain, North-Western Territory on 4 Apr 1856 to Charles Azure and Nancy Grant.^[1] Baptism took place at St. François Xavier, Red River Settlement on 20 May 1856.^[2]

Francois married Julie Pelletier (daughter of Pierre Pelletier and Josephte Deschamps) at St. Peter's Mission in Milk River, Montana on 9 Feb 1880.^[3]

On 15 Apr 1885, Francois claimed Métis scrip, which was approved later the same year.^[1] His declaration included the following statements:

(Where were you living each year since you were born?) My father and mother were originally from St. François Xavier, Man. They moved from there with myself for the North West Territories long before the 15th Jul 1870 and on the said 15th Jul 1870 we were at Ste. Agathe coming from the NWT & we came to St. Vital in 1871. Since 7 years I left my parents and I have been in the Territories ever since. I have taken up permanent residence in the Qu'Appelle Valley last year. My parents are now living in North [illegible].

(What has been your occupation?) I am cultivating land in the Pasqua Indian Reserve.

[Statement written on bottom of first page] My father my mother and four of my brothers have received their rights as Manitoba half-breeds.

(State anything bearing on your claim that you may wish) I have been in this vicinity continually since 1st March last.

He passed away on 25 Dec 1931.^[4]
