Pvt William Hamilton Balch was KIlled in Action during The United States Civil War.

William H. Balch was born 6 August 1834, Indiana to Dr. Calvin W. Balch (1811-1894) and Jane T. McNutt (1809-1842).[1] In 1850, William was 15 years old, his father Calvin was 39, and stepmother Elizabeth was 29.[2]

At the time of his enlistment he was living in Greenville, Bond, Illinois. On 5 September 1862, William and his brother Samuel enlisted with the Union Army. They were mustered into Company E. 130th Regiment, Illinois Infantry on 25 October 1862 at Camp Butler.[3][4][5]

William H. Balch was killed in action at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 22 May 1863. His brother Samuel D. Balch was wounded in the same battle, he died in Kansas a year later of war injuries.

William is believed to be buried in the Vicksburg National Cemetery but in an unknown grave.
