George was born 25 Sep 1853 in Lansdowne, Upper Canada. He went west with the Wolseley Expedition of 1870 and returned to Ontario where he worked in the timber industry. In 1882, George and his cousin James accompanied his brother Walter on a surveying expedition from Winnipeg westward. They chose land to homestead, but they learned in 1883 that it was not available to them, so chose other land. [1]George homesteaded at a place called The Crossing, near Red Deer, Alberta. His patent to the land described as SE quarter of section 2 range 38 township 28 West of the 4th meridian was granted 12 Jun 1888.
[2] In 1891, George was living in a 1-room house near James and W.H. Kemp. [3] By 1901, George was married with 3 children and a hotel keeper in Red Deer. [4]
