Bridgetown Notes. (1918,) [2] (From Our Correspondent)

At the last meeting of the Bridgetown Road Board, Thoughtful John, I mean J. H. Blechynden, suggested that concerted action should be taken by all the Road Boards in the Nelson Electorate to recognise in some way the splendid services rendered to the community by Lord Forrest, and to express the people's pleasure at his being raised to the Peerage.

Acting on this suggestion, the Secretary was instructed to write to the other Road Boards in the district, inviting them to send delegates to a meeting to be held on the 13th inst with a view to taking common action in furtherance of the above project. Accordingly, on the date named, a meeting was held in the Board Room, Bridgetown, when the following delegates were present : — Greenbushes, Messrs. Lindsay and Gibney; Balingup, Messrs. Wansborough and Wright; Upper Blackwood, Messrs Doust and Smith; Bridgetown, Messrs Smith and Blechynden ; Warren Road Board sent a communication to the effect that their meeting was on the 13th. and therefore they would be unable to send a delegate. They expressed their willingness to co-operate in any scheme for so worthy an object.
Mr. J. H. Smith, chairman of the Bridgetown Road Board, was in the chair, and, after declaring the meeting open, asked Mr. Blechynden, as the mover of the original motion, to open the discussion. Mr. Blechynden briefly outlined what he thought would be the best and most acceptable means to the end in view, namely, an illuminated address, to be presented to Lord Forrest at a public reception to be held in his honour. He expressed his belief that Lord Forrest would deprecate any great expense, and would prize more than anything else our gratitude spontaneously and publicly expressed, and made manifest and tangible in the form of an address.
Mr. Gibney moved that the presentation take the form of an 'illuminated address.' This was seconded by Mr. Crawford and carried. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Crawford, that the expenses of the address be borne by the different Road Boards. Mr. Sparkes moved That an executive committee be elected to make arrangements with regard to the address and reception. This was seconded by Mr. G. Hester and carried.
Mr. Tregurtha was unanimously appointed Hon. Secretary, and the following gentlemen were appointed to the Committee : — Messrs. Blechynden, Lindsay, Wansborough, Doust, and J. C. Rose (Warren), with Mr. J. H. Smith, chairman ; members of committee to be able to appoint deputies in their absence. It was resolved to call a meeting as soon as a reply had been received from Lord Forrest.
Sad to relate, the meeting did not conclude until after the pubs had closed.

One would inevitably die of thirst if dependant on local cider for a drink, but it is cheering to hear that the chief engineer of the Apple Squeezing Works will soon have the cheering fluid flowing like a river.
He — the chief apple squeezer — has done it all on his own, and has fashioned a decent plant out of the most unpromising materials. Will tell you more about it later.
On Friday evening last there was a most flattering gathering at the Farmers' Home Hotel, to say au revoir [3] to Mr. John Blechynden . . . . . and more . . . . . in his honour prior to his departure on a trip to New Zealand.
