Biography

Preliminary Note:

There was a Cornelius Bogert (abt.1740-), son of Lucas Bogert and Dority Vander Hoef, and this is verified in a Bergen County, New Jersey, baptismal record for August 15, 1742. His father's will of September 1, 1777, shows him in line to inherit forty shillings and forty acres of farmland in Bergen County. [1] [2]

And there was a Cornelius Bogart (abt.1755-) who married Catherine Westfall, in Knowlton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, and who later had children David, John, and Mary Bogart, and perhaps others. This Cornelius is believed to have been sentenced to death for resisting enlistment in the rebel cause during the American Revolution. [3]

There is no reason to believe that these two Corneliuses were actually the same person, other than similarity of name and birth-year.

Information and sources added to this profile should refer to the Cornelius Bogert associated with Bergen County, specifically the son of Lucas Bogert and Dority Vander Hoef.

Bogart-1085 and Bogert-289 do not represent the same person because: The problem is that the parents of my ancestor Cornelius Bogart (Bogart-1085) are not Lucas Bogert and Dorothy Vanderhoef, as can be seen by looking a Lucas Bogert's will, church records for the children of the "other" Cornelius (Bogert-289), and other factors (Sussex County, NJ, versus Bergen County, NJ, for instance). Merging these two profiles would be wrong, as they are different people. I will revise the wife and children for Bogert-289 to avoid future confusion on the matter.

Repeating an earlier comment on a similar proposed merge: Bogart-1085 and Bogert-289 do not represent the same person because: There is confusion about Cornelius Bogart. The Bogert-289 version was from Bergen County (not Minisink region), had parents Lucas Bogert and Dorothy Vanderheof, and there are no sources explaining how he got to Knowlton Twp, Sussex County, NJ; this Cornelius had wife Catrina or Catherine. But Bogart-1085 was born in Minisink region, perhaps Hunterdon County or Sussex County, had mother Mary (if plea for mercy in profile is correct), had wife Catherine Westfall (there is record of marriage taking place in Knowlton Twp). Further, based on sources and confirmed by DNA, this Cornelius had children John, David, Mary and perhaps others, which differs from children that can be ascribed to Bogert-289, based on church records for Bergen County area. This is an example of a wrong guess being perpetuated so many times that it takes the appearance of truth. One thing I should do soon (as the maintainer of Bogart-1085) is modify the spousal relationship for Bogert-289 to indicate that he *did not* marry Catrina Westfall, but rather another Catrina; but since this mistake is longstanding, there may be resistance to such a change.

Bogart-1085 and Bogert-289 appear to represent the same person because: Please r3eview these potential duplicates.

Thank you. Both husbands of the same wife.

Bogart-1085 and Bogert-289 appear to represent the same person because: Year of birth is close, sources provided show they both lived in New Jersey, share the same wife
