Family history has it that Fred ran away from home several times and was always found again. One of the times he ran away, he was found working as a cabin boy on one of the many Thames Barges that plied their trade up and down the Thames river. There is a story that on one of his longer excursions on a Thames Barge, while working as the Captains cabin boy, he had to prepare food for the Captain. This particular Captain liked Plum Duff pudding as a sweet, which would be good for several meals. Sometimes Fred used to help himself to a slice, but the Captain always seemed to know and box his ears for stealing his pudding. Fred could never work out how the Captain used to always know. It wasn't until many years later that he discovered how the Captain always knew. It seems that hot Plum Duff pudding cuts a clean edge when sliced, where as cold Plum Duff pudding cuts a ragged edge. Mystery solved.

Frederick always wanted to go to sea, and spent may years in the Royal Navy, mainly serving in the Far East Squadron, China Station. This made life for his wife, Martha, very difficult, having to manage by herself, especially when their first child, Robin, came along. It was not uncommon for Martha to go and stay with Fred's Family, in Kent or her family in Gloucestershire for extended periods. Martha used to spend long periods in Kent, especially when the in-laws were helping out with Hop Picking, for which she would earn extra money over and above what Fred could send to her. Among other ships, Fred served on HMS Iroquois (Survey Ship) on the China Station, as well as HMS Cornflower in the Far East and at least one tour of duty on HMS Warspite.

Frederick was not an educated man, but was very practical, and sensible. Although he never had much in monetary terms, he rose to be a long standing Chairman of the local Havant branch of the Buffs (Royal Atedelunium Order of the Buffalo {The poor mans Mansonic Lodge, as it was known as}) for many years.

Richard, I checked and don't see the change to the category. Could you change is to just:

"Royal Andediluvian Order of Buffaloes". No Organizations, no Buffs. Thanks. Vic

Richard, I was checking wanted categories and came across the Buffs. Could you please change the category to Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes? Then I will set up the category.

Thanks, Vic
