Biography

Ramsay Douglas Broadfoot was born in 1857, at Govan in Lanarkshire, the son of Alexander Broadfoot and Margaret Douglas.[1][2]

On the 7th October 1890, he married Annie Elizabeth Blagrave Ainslie at Maxwelton, Kirkcudbrightshire.[3][4]

A barrister-at-law by profession, Mr. Douglas was employed with the Madras Civil Service.[4] His wife died in Madras on the 14th November 1901.[5]

On the 20th April 1903, he married, secondly, Julia Maude Sabine Brooke, daughter of William O'Shaughnessy Brooke, in Madras.[6]

Having removed to England in 1910 on a two-year leave, Mr. and Mrs. Broadfoot settled at Trull, near Taunton, in Somerset. On the 11th July in that year, however, Ramsay Douglas Broadfoot died by suicide.[7][8]

Newspaper extract from the Gloucestershire Echo, 14th July 1910:

TRAGIC DEATH OF A JUDGE.
Mr. Ramsay Douglas Broadfoot, of the Indian Civil Service, a district and sessions judge of Madras, was found dead in his bedroom at Hovelands Lodge, Trull, near Taunton, on Monday morning, with a bullet wound in his head and a revolver by his side. A coroner’s jury on Wednesday returned a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind.
Mr. Broadfoot, who was in England on two years’ furlough, had seen about thirty years’ service, and had frequently had malarial fever during that time. Lately he had been greatly worried about various subjects, one of these being that he considered he had been passed over in connection with the appointment of two judges to the Madras High Court, while another was that his son had been invalided out of Dartmouth Royal Naval College through being shortsighted.[8]

Abstract of the last will and testament of Mr. Ramsay Douglas Broadfoot:
