Biography

William Alexander Broadfoot was born in India in 1894, the son of Ramsay Douglas Broadfoot, Esq. and Annie Elizabeth Blagrave Ainslie. [1] [2]
While his parents were in India, and previous to his mother's death in November, 1901, William and his sister, Margaret, were living with their Aunt, Margaret Wood, in Elie, Scotland when the 1901 census was enumerated earlier in the year:
  • Margaret G Wood, age 51, head, living on own means; born at Pollockshaus [Pollokshaws], Renfrewshire
  • Christina C Douglas, age 68, aunt, living on own means; born at Edinburgh, Midlothian
  • Margaret C Broadfoot, age 9, niece; born at Hesur [sic], India
  • William A Broadfoot, age 6, nephew; born in India
  • Annie Angus, age 32, servant, Nurse (domestic); born in St Andrews, Fifeshire
  • Maggie Angus, age 27, servant, Cook (domestic); born at Balmernis [Balmerino?], Fifeshire

  • census place: The Terrace, Elie, Fife, Scotland. [2]
On 16th May 1923, (then) Captain William Broadfoot, Skinners Horse, Indian Army, married Frances Leslie Arnold, daughter of Arthur Waller Arnold, at Ferozepore, Bengal. [3]
Colonel Broadfoot was awarded the O.B.E., as Ordinary Officer of the Military Division, on the 1st January 1948. [4]
The appearance of Colonel Broadfoot’s name in a schedule entitled, “Return of Land Grants,” dated 31st March 1965, demonstrates his interest in settling on (or investing in) fifty-four acres of land at Nakur[u] in Kenya. The schedule cites first, the surrender of lands, then the regrant of same under specific legislation (Cap 280). [5]
In his later years, Colonel Broadfoot lived at Njoro. William Alexander Broadfoot, O.B.E., died at Nakuru in the Rift Valley, Kenya, on the 7th September 1969, aged seventy-four years. [6] [7]
