Biography

Luke was born in 1918. When LUKE OLIVER BRUBAKER was born on February 21, 1918, in Eugene, Oregon, his father, LAWRENCE, was 35 and his mother, Carolyn, was 38. He married Emmy Lou "Emily" PITCHER and they had four children together.

When Luke and Emmy Lou were married with three children they went to live in the large ranch house in Hemet, California. Luke had built it with his father, Lawrence. It had a large lawn all around the house except for the side with Emmy Lou's flower garden containing roses, daffodils and many other flowers. Near this garden was a large guava tree by the back porch and across the drive way was a giant pepper tree. The house was very nice with many rooms: a long living room and dining room with a fireplace and library, a huge kitchen with an eating area, Luke's studio with a bedroom, and off the kitchen was a laundry room and a bathroom. On the other side of the large living room were the master bedroom, bathrooms and the children's bedrooms with a door leading out to a big back garden. In the ceiling of one of the children's rooms there was an attic entrance to the fantasy world and delight of the children. Trunks full of old clothes and other goodies were stored here providing many an hour of joyful play.

The furniture was early American and the house had many Indian artefacts, some found by Luke and Emmy Lou in the local mountains around Hemet and San Jacinto, California. The Indian artefacts can be seen at the Ramona Bowl Musuem, being donated by the Brubaker family. At the back of the estate were the horse stalls for Sugar Foot - a thorough bred race horse, Pepper - a quarter horse, and Goldie - a Palomino who could do tricks like opening the gate so the three horses could go running about town and through the park.

Then the estate included acres for drying out the apricots and beyond that was land filled with apricot trees and walnut trees surrounded by an excellent irrigation system with canals. In the springtime the air was filled with perfume from their flowers and bees were brought in for pollination.

So Luke carried on his ancestor's activities of farming, he was a preacher in his religion and he also built Meeting Places for his religion. Thank goodness he went from Berkeley University, which he attended from 1939 to 1942, back to farming walnuts and apricots when the war broke out in 1941 so he could provide food for his nation.

He then married second Ruth Marie MacFarland Highducheck and they had one child together in 1970. He died on March 22, 2015, in Hemet, California, at the age of 97. [1]
