William was born to John Cochrane and Anne Hunter on 4 March 1788, and baptized 8 March 1788 in Alva Parish, Stirlingshire.[1][2]

William married Helen Drysdale. Their marriage likely took place in about 1806 prior to the birth of their first child.

By 1841, William had become a widower and was living on his own on Green Street in Alva. His occupation was listed as Woolen Hand Loom Weaver Journeyman.[3] In 1851, at age 73, he was still working as a woolen hand loom weaver and was living with his daughters Euphemia and Helen, and a granddaughter recorded as Mary Archibald.[4]

William's date of death is unknown.

Research Notes

No record of a marriage between a William Cochrane and a Drysdale could be found using Scotlands People in any Scottish parish between 1780 and 1855, including using fuzzy matching.

William's date of death is unknown. No records could be found in Alva parish or the statutory records within a 100 year lifespan. He does not appear in the 1861 census with Euphemia and Helen.

In the Alva parish kirk session minutes from 1798 through 12 February 1804, then June 17, 1807 through 1834, there were two entries that seemed to reference Williams daughters:

  • April 1830 - an Anne Cochrane was rebuked by the Alva kirk session on 4 April 1830 for the sin of antinuptial fornication with on Wm. Elliot. (Scotland's People, Alva kirk session, Minutes (1770-1834), CH2/10/3) This is likely William's daughter.[10]
  • March 1834 - Euphemia Cochrane claimed she was pregnant by John Archibald. Euphemia is William's daughter.[11]

The remainder of the kirk session minutes for 1804 through 16 June 1807 were missing from the records available from Scotlands People.
