Biography

When Rachel Cowgill was born on December 4, 1728, in Burlington, New Jersey, her father, Henry, was 24. She married George Payne on March 26, 1752. They had ten children between 1753 and 1767. She died on August 9, 1816, in Washington County,Tennessee, having lived a long life of 87 years.

As Quakers, Rachel and her family were opposed to war. According to the obituary of her grandson Dr. Abraham Smith Jr., she taught medicine to him, as she had been a physician and surgeon in the hospital during the Revolutionary War. This teaching of medicine occurred in Tennessee. Although Abraham was a spinner of tall tales, there may be a grain of truth in the story, if Rachel had a role in caring for the sick and wounded, which is consistent with her Quaker beliefs.^[1]
