Biography

Sarah Anna David was born around 1828 in Indiana, to parents Jeremiah Sterling David and Susannah Prather. The David family moved from Indiana to Gasconade, Missouri before 1840. Around 1847 Sarah married James Yates, son of Alexander P Yates. The families had been neighbors in Gasconade Co before moving in the mid or late 1840s to Gentry Co, or what became Worth, in the northwest part of the state. This is probably where Sarah and James married, because their first child, Susanna was reported to have been born in Worth Co on her death certificate. Sarah's sister, Martha E David, married James' brother Andrew Jackson Yates around 1853 in the same area.

The 1850 census record for Sarah and James hasn't been found, but their 6 children were all born in Missouri. In 1860 they lived in Cedar, Benton County in southwestern Missouri, and by 1870 they were in Cullen, Pulaski County, where they remained. Sarah Anna appears to have passed away by 1873, when James is said to have married the widow Charlotte "Lotty" Terna Adams (nee Crossland), whose husband James Adams had died in September, 1872. She is said to have been buried in Idumea Cemetery, Laquey, Pulaski, Co. (See Find A Grave: Memorial #52133171.)

N.B. Some have mistaken a Thomas Yates, born ~1868, as a biological son of James Arthur and Sarah Anna, because he was listed as a son of James at age 12 in the 1880 census, after James had remarried to Charlotte. The youngest child listed with Sarah and James in 1870 was Mary Jane, born in December, 1861. Evidently, Thomas was a son of Charlotte and her first husband James Adams, listed with them in 1870 as J Thomas Adams, age 2, in Robidoux, Pulaski, Missouri. What became of him, and under which last name, isn't known.
