Elizabeth was born in 1830 in Indiana. Her parents were Jeremiah Sterling David and Susannah Prather. The David family moved from Indiana to Gasconade, Missouri before 1840. In the mid to late 1840s, Jeremiah David, his brother Lewis David, and some neighbors moved their families to the northwest part of Missouri, to Gentry County and what would become Worth Co. One such neighbor was Alexander P Yates, whose son James married Elizabeth’s older sister around 1847 and had their first child in 1848 in Gentry/Worth. In 1850 though, Jeremiah David though had moved his family to Pottawattamie, Iowa, on the Missouri River, opposite Omaha, in the business of supplying steamboats with wood (see census, Elizabeth at age 19). The family probably had returned to Gentry by 1853, when Elizabeth married Andrew Jackson Yates (1829-1885).
Elizabeth and Andrew had four surviving children born to them over the next 10 years, while they lived near Andrew’s parents in Gentry/Worth Co. During the Civil War, Andrew served for the Union, from 1863 to 1865 with the Union Missouri Cavalry. By 1868, the family had moved to Arkansas, the Upper Lafave (Bluffton) area of Yell County. Andrew’s father, Alexander P Yates, came to live with them in the late 1870s.
In 1885 Andrew was murdered by a hired hand. (See Andrew’s profile.) In 1890 Elizabeth filed for a widow’s military pension. She passed away in 1897, in Gravelly, Yell, Arkansas.
